After just having returned from the Stem Cell Institute in Panama City, PANAMA, and 85 degree daytime temperatures, it was a bit of a shock to come home to white caps surging over our seawall on Lake Macatawa and a very blustery day. Lake Macatawa is about 6 miles long with varying widths and bays such as Big Bay and Pine Creek Bay where it is as wide as a mile or more and is about 1700 acres. It is navigable for miles to the east where it turns into the Black River and there it is only good for smaller boats such as fishing boats and kayaks. And to the west it feeds (via the Holland pier) into Lake Michigan. From Holland's Lake Macatawa, you can boat all the way to Chicago to the south, Milwaukee to the west or north to Beaver or Drummind or Mackinac Islands and through the locks to the Eastern Seaboard. Many a resident with a boat on Lake Macatawa have done the "Great Loop". down the Mississippi River or through the Soo Locks and rounded the tip of Florida.
There are everything from standup paddle boards and kayaks to large freighters such as the Manitowoc which is 630 feet long. Some of the marinas that are for recreational purposes are Eldean's and the Macatawa Bay Yacht Club on the south side of the lake in Holland near Macatawa. And the Yacht Basin and Anchorage on the north side. They have swimming pools, and some have public or private restaurants. There is also a few places to rent boats, kayaks and stand up paddle boards. There is also the Holland Princess that runs daily sunset cruises and dinner cruises in the summer time. The Macatawa Boat House is just west of Eldean's Marina.
Yes, you can swim in Lake Macatawa and fish as well as use it for recreational boating.
