Lake Macatawa – Safe Harbor in West Michigan

Big Red - Lake Macatawa Lighthouse

There are quite a few ports around the Michigan coastline, each with it’s own distinct personality. Some are more industrialized, others provide a central hub around which small, waterfront towns thrive and vacationing families go to relax on the beach.

Located on the West Michigan shore, Lake Macatawa gives Holland, Michigan more than 1700 acres of watery back yard. At 6 miles long and 1.2 miles across at it’s widest point, Lake Macatawa is not the largest port in Western Michigan. However, it is one of the most picturesque, with an active boating community, stunning sunsets, access to the Big Lake, and beautiful waterfront homes.

Lake Macatawa is surrounded on all sides by the town of Holland, with the north side ending on the Holland State Park beach and its south side marked by Big Red – the Holland Harbor lighthouse originally constructed in 1907.

At the eastern end of Lake Macatawa sits the Holland city center, with a flourishing shopping and dining scene that includes a Saturday morning farmers market and a wealth of Dutch cultural influences.

Named for the original, Holland is awash in Dutch heritage. Wooden shoes and windmills can be found throughout the area, but for those who wish to see a real Dutch spectacle, the once a year celebration known as Tulip Time is not to be missed.

Each May, as the tulip bulbs planted along many of Holland’s main streets and city’s main sidewalks begin to bloom, the floral explosion covers the city in brilliant colors.

The flowers are not the only attraction during the Tulip Time celebration. Parades featuring participants dressed in traditional Dutch clothing – complete with wooden shoes – march through the streets and even perform some Dutch dances for the crowd.

The Lake Macatawa waterfront also provides homebuyers with an alternative to the beachfront housing market along the Lake Michigan coastline. While waterfront homes on Lake Michigan may have an unblocked view of the open water, Lake Macatawa homeowners can install docks for boats of almost any size.

Although each shoreline has it’s unique features, Lake Macatawa may be a better choice for some new home buyers depending on their own unique lifestyle.
